Cosa può dare uno studio sociologico dell’economia che non possa una prospettiva propriamente economica? Cosa sono, come funzionano e come cambiano le istituzioni dell’economia? Fenomeni come proprietà, denaro, transazione, fiducia, organizzazione e impresa: in che modo vengono ulteriormente compresi da una prospettiva sociologica? È possibile avere una comprensione meno incerta di fenomeni così oscuri e imprevedibili come quelli del mutamento e dell’innovazione industriale? La teoria dei sistemi sociali e la teoria dell’evoluzione della società aiutano a rispondere a queste domande cruciali. La prima consente di spiegare l’economia come quel particolare sottosistema della società che deve destreggiarsi tra esigenze di autovalorizzazione da un lato, e obblighi di soddisfare i bisogni della società dall’altro. Così, ciò che per l’una è accumulazione, per l’altra appare come crescita, progresso. Tuttavia, reciproche incompatibilità sistemiche, tensioni e “crisi” sono sempre possibili: valorizzazione e bisogni possono dissociarsi. Con la seconda teoria è proprio questa intrinseca dinamicità della società moderna e della sua economia che si cerca di cogliere, in un quadro concettualmente coerente con la teoria dei sistemi. Per quanto si tratti di un approccio per certi aspetti ancora in fieri, riteniamo che esso sia già in grado di offrire una visione nuova e stimolante dell’economia, e questo proprio in quanto l’“economico” è osservato dalla prospettiva di una teoria evoluzionistica della società.
