A retrospective on the work of rising contemporary artist Claude Lévêque, who designed the French Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Contemporary French artist Claude Lévêque is renowned for his large neon light installations which call to mind dreamlike and poetic realms. He also works in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, video, sound, and mist. His work, which includes references to pop culture such as rock, punk, and film, often evokes a sense of nostalgia and enchantment, and covers subjects such as idealized childhood and ephemera. This richly illustrated monograph retraces his artistic development from its inception in the 1980s to the present. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions for twenty-five years in galleries and museums in Europe, the US, and Asia. He is represented by galleries in Paris and Luxemburg. Claude Lévêque was commissioned to transform the French Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Contemporary Art Biennale, following in the footsteps of Daniel Buren, Annette Messager, and Sophie Calle.

Stereo: Comparative Perspectives on the Sociological Study of Popular Music in France and Britain

Stereo: Comparative Perspectives on the Sociological Study of Popular Music in France and Britain

Author: Philippe Le Guern

The term 'Popular Music' has traditionally denoted different things in France and Britain. In France, the very concept of 'popular' music has been fiercely debated and contested, whereas in Britain and more largely throughout what the French describe as the 'Anglo-saxon' world 'popular music' has been more readily accepted as a description of what people do as leisure or consume as part of the music industry, and as something that academics are legitimately entitled to study. French researchers have for some decades been keenly interested in reading British and American studies of popular culture and popular music and have often imported key concepts and methodologies into their own work on French music, but apart from the widespread use of elements of 'French theory' in British and American research, the 'Anglo-saxon' world has remained largely ignorant of particular traditions of the study of popular music in France and specific theoretical debates or organizational principles of the making and consuming of French musics. French, British and American research into popular music has thus coexisted - with considerable cross-fertilization - for many years, but the barriers of language and different academic traditions have made it hard for French and anglophone researchers to fully appreciate the ways in which popular music has developed in their respective countries and the perspectives on its study adopted by their colleagues. This volume provides a comparative and contrastive perspective on popular music and its study in France and the UK.

Aesthetics of the Virtual

Aesthetics of the Virtual

Author: Roberto Diodato
Publisher: SUNY Press
ISBN: 1438444370
Pages: 171
Year: 2012-11-15
Arguing that the virtual body is something new—namely, an entity that from an ontological perspective has only recently entered the world—Roberto Diodato considers the implications of this kind of body for aesthetics. Virtual bodies insert themselves into the space opened up by the famous distinction in Aristotle’s Physics between natural and artificial beings—they are both. They are beings that are simultaneously events; they are images that are at once internal and external; they are ontological hybrids that exist only in the interaction between logical-computational text and human bodies endowed with technological prostheses. Pursuing this line of thought, Diodato reconfigures classic aesthetic concepts such as mimesis, representation, the relation between illusion and reality, the nature of images and imagination, and the theory of sensory knowledge.

The Sex Lives of Siamese Twins

The Sex Lives of Siamese Twins

Author: Irvine Welsh
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0385539398
Pages: 368
Year: 2015-02-03
When Lucy Brennan, a Miami Beach personal-fitness trainer, disarms an apparently crazed gunman, the police and the breaking-news cameras are not far behind. Within hours, Lucy becomes a hero. The solitary eye-witness, the depressed and overweight Lena Sorenson, thrilled by Lucy's heroism and decisiveness, becomes obsessed with the trainer and enrolls as a client at her Bodysculpt gym. It quickly becomes clear that Lena is more interested in Lucy's body than her own, and a budding fatal attraction takes hold. However, it's when Lucy imprisons Lena, and can't stop thinking about the sex lives of Siamese twins, that the real problems start. In Lucy and Lena, Irvine Welsh has created two of his most memorable female protagonists, and one of the most bizarre, sadomasochistic folie à deux in contemporary fiction. The Sex Lives of Siamese Twins taps into two great obsessions of our time--how we look and where we live--and tells a story so subversive and dark it blacks out the Florida sun.
